Agriculture Development project for Sri Lanka launched by EU

The project titled "support to the modernization of the agriculture sector in Sri Lanka" will support the development of overarching Sri Lankan agriculture policy.

A statement from the European Union (EU) Embassy in Colombo said that the EU has launched a USD 5.1 million project to support the modernization of Sri Lanka's agriculture sector.

EU Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Tung-Lai Margue said the program had been designed with the needs of the small farmers in mind.

According to the statement, the project titled "support to the modernization of the agriculture sector in Sri Lanka" will support the development of overarching Sri Lankan agriculture policy and it will be operational for three years.

The statement also said it would promote the diversification of high-value agricultural production with the focus on improving export earnings.

The development objectives of Agriculture Sector Modernization Project for Sri Lanka are to support increasing agriculture productivity, improving market access, and enhancing value addition of smallholder farmers and agribusinesses in the project areas.

This project has three components marking the aims like agriculture value chain development, supporting smallholder farmers to produce competitive and marketable commodities, improve their ability to respond to market requirements, and move towards increased commercialization.
